SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH

Landscape and still-life artist Kathryn Stats’ work is very much her own, not really echoing the styles of any of the painters with whom she has studied. Stats has traveled to and painted the coastal areas of California and Oregon as well as locations in Alaska, Russia, Spain, Italy, France, and Portugal. But her work communicates an intimate knowledge of Utah’s remarkable landscape, one absorbed from a childhood riding horseback through the countryside. An expressive artist, Stats prefers to paint directly from nature on location. There, she creates a small sketch and takes photographs to get a feel for the place and to document color and values, which she’ll refer to later in her studio. A principal element in her work is light and shadow, impeccable dimension, the changing patterns of nature’s structures and shapes, and a discerning sense of color. Her direct and honest work captures the intrigue of Utah’s natural power and beauty, particularly it’s red rock country, sandstone formations, scenic vistas, and weather-worn structures of days gone by. 

Currently, Stats paints from her studio in Salt Lake City. She offers mentoring to other artists, and throughout the years, Stats has received several awards, including people’s choice winner, artist’s choice, and master artist. She’s also been featured in galleries and invitational shows throughout the west.
